99% of pregnancy related deaths occur in the developing world. Each year, 529,000 women and girls die worldwide due to complications related to pregnancy, including as many as 70,000 women and girls who die every year from botched abortions, millions more are left injured. These are just estimates. Actual numbers of women dying are much higher when you consider how many deaths go unreported. The vast majority of these fatalities are preventable.
Get Involved with the Campaign
The Feminist Majority Foundation's Campus Program plays an instrumental role in educating our network of over 450 colleges campuses across the United States about the far reaching impacts that policies made in the United States have on the reproductive health and lives of women around the world. The FMF Campus Campaign mobilizes college students on global reproductive health and rights issues.
Now more than ever, it is vital to speak out for global reproductive rights and health issues. Educate your campus on what students can do to reduce the needless dying and suffering of young women in the developing world because of lack of access to reproductive health services. Expose links between lack of access to family planning, sweatshops, poverty and violence against women around the world.
- Plan events to educate your campus about Global Reproductive Health and Rights to draw the connections between inadequate access to reproductive health services and birth control and how this affects the lives of women worldwide. Screen and discuss FMF's own "The Global Majority...Again" DVD.
- Organize with our Afghan Women's Health Campaign. One in six Afghan women will die from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. You can help Afghan women and girls (indeed, all too many very young girls -- 11, 12, or 13 years old -- will become pregnant) with as little as $3,000.
