Most of us have had some time to reflect on the work done this election season, but now it is time to strategize and mobilize to fight for the changes we have worked towards. What better venue than the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference! This time the conference is the weekend of March 23-25, 2013 [...]

After the Election: Organize to Protect Abortion Access in Your Community

November 15, 2012 by Sarah Shanks 2 Comments

I’ve officially recovered from my election exhaustion. For months, I’ve been working alongside many other young feminists to fight off politicians and policies that would have backpedaled our reproductive rights into the dark ages. During the election season, we heard so much political discourse about abortion and contraception, mostly from those who have no related [...]

The week of the Democratic National Convention is quickly approaching: a week filled with blocked roads, political figures, and major events and demonstrations. The approaching DNC has excited (or exasperated) many of us who are interested in politics or live in the Charlotte area. Although most people will be scurrying off to this luncheon or [...]

Women’s Equality Day is coming up this Sunday! Tis’ the season to mobilize for women’s rights! Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. It is a time where many advocates for women’s rights get together to celebrate and rally to advance women’s equality. In the [...]

Well, here we go again folks. On Monday the Colorado Personhood Coalition submitted 112,121 signatures for a “personhood” amendment, of which 86,105 are required for advancement.  This will be their third consecutive campaign to outlaw abortion rights in the state, and let’s hope it is their third defeat. As reported by the Huffington Post, Personhood [...]

OSA July Clinic Siege Weak; Large Numbers Expected During DNC

July 31, 2012 by Sarah Shanks 1 Comment

Now that Operation Save America’s clinic siege is over, we have all had time to reflect on the week. Although OSA brought a hefty crowd to Charlotte  in 2010, their numbers seemed a lot smaller this time around. On their biggest days, they might have had around 40 people (including children) outside of the clinic. [...]

Clinic Defense Update: OSA Targets Doctor’s Home

As I arrived at the clinic Saturday morning a lot of things came back to me, like the sinking in my stomach as I drove up to the clinic, not knowing if it would be quiet, or if dozens of protestors would greet me with hatred and sign waving. Not a lot has changed in [...]

Help Defend Abortion Access in Charlotte July 21-28

The first time I stood outside of an abortion clinic was in the summer of 2010. Activists like me were spending the week defending a clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, that had been targeted for a national event by a rowdy anti-choice group called Operation Save America (OSA). The first time I saw these protestors [...]

Well, the vote is in and it doesn’t look so good. As I mentioned in my previous blog, people in NC voted yesterday on a marriage ban. Last night the  constitutional amendment  that defines marriage as the legal union between a man and a woman passed. Amendment One, or the Defense of Marriage Act, not [...]

As we head into the election season, there are many daunting initiatives coming our way in many states. One election that is speeding our way is in North Dakota on June 12th, and one particularly frightening Measure being voted on in the state is the Religious Liberty Restoration Amendment. Although religious freedom is already thoroughly [...]
