7 Billion People. Why Should We Care?

November 1, 2011 by Guest Blogger Leave a Comment
Indian children

by Karen Ning The number “7 billion” is everywhere right now as the United Nation estimates that the world’s population hit 7 billion people on October 31st 2011.  To gauge my friends’ reactions to this milestone, I asked, “Do you worry about the upcoming overpopulation issue after the world hits 7 billion people?” Sadly, most [...]

Picture of HIV contraceptive shot

A study published last week called into question the benefits of injectable hormones, the most popular form of contraception used in Southern and Eastern Africa, and identified a link between the contraception and HIV transmission.  The study appeared in a New York Times article, attracting attention to the possible implications for the women of Africa [...]

Speak Out Against Virginia’s TRAP Laws

August 31, 2011 by Sarah Shanks 1 Comment
Virginia Coalition to Protect Women's Health

In Virginia abortion clinics might soon close at an alarming rate due to legislation requiring they be regulated like hospitals. In March, Governor McDonnell signed SB 924, a bill that classifies women’s health centers in the state as a category of hospitals, making them subject to new regulations created by the Department of Health. These [...]

HERvotes: Reject the Disenfranchisement of the Working Class

August 29, 2011 by Laura Kacere Leave a Comment
Capitol

This blog is part of the #HERvotes blog carnival. As voter suppression laws in states throughout the country threaten to disenfranchise millions of voters, it is imperative to look at how the groups targeted by these laws also have a stake in the very issues at the heart of the upcoming election.  Decisions affecting access [...]

New Abortion Billboard in Atlanta Targets African American Leaders

August 22, 2011 by Francesca Witcher Leave a Comment
antiabortion-billboard5

Not again. Another anti-abortion billboard was put on display by the Restoration Project in Atlanta last week, this time targeting African American leader Jesse Jackson. The billboard reads “What does it mean to be betrayed?” with “betrayed” written in blood-scripted letters. What’s even more insulting is The Restoration Project’s domain for their website: www.abortioninthehood.com. It [...]

Another Funding Cut for Woman’s Health Care?

HR3 Protest

We need you to take action NOW — TODAY. We hope, by now, that you’ve heard about the two horrible bills introduced in the House that restrict abortion access and funding. The “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” (HR3) would penalize companies–in the form of tax credits–that offer health plans that cover abortion and would [...]

One Year Later: The women of Haiti & an American feminist

January 12, 2011 by Meghan Shalvoy Leave a Comment

For a while there it seemed as if most of the world had forgotten about Haiti (again). This week, by all indications from the news media, the ongoing tragedy has not been completely forgotten. Unfortunately, I can’t help but feel discouraged when nearly half of the people I speak to about Haiti are sure that [...]
