August 10, 2012 by Sarah Shanks 2 Comments
embryo-slide

Well, here we go again folks. On Monday the Colorado Personhood Coalition submitted 112,121 signatures for a “personhood” amendment, of which 86,105 are required for advancement.  This will be their third consecutive campaign to outlaw abortion rights in the state, and let’s hope it is their third defeat. As reported by the Huffington Post, Personhood [...]

Hundreds of thousands of students in the mostly French-speaking province of Canada have been involved in this year’s inspiring Quebec student movement – often referred to as the Maple Spring – which began in February as a response to the government’s announcement to raise university tuition costs by 65% over the next 4 years. Quebec’s university [...]

Help Defend Abortion Access in Charlotte July 21-28

The first time I stood outside of an abortion clinic was in the summer of 2010. Activists like me were spending the week defending a clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, that had been targeted for a national event by a rowdy anti-choice group called Operation Save America (OSA). The first time I saw these protestors [...]

voting image for blog 1

Florida Governor Rick Scott claims to be protecting his state from voter fraud in the upcoming November elections by purging all suspected “non-citizens” from the voting rolls. Under this disguise, both Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner are leading the charge to enact what seems to be another attempt to suppress the vote in [...]

kariva pill pack final 2

Once again Catholic institutions have decided to take young women’s choices and lives into their own hands.  Several Catholic institutions, dioceses and charities across the country have filed lawsuits against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) federal mandate that requires employers to provide birth control coverage in their health plans. Although insurance companies [...]

Going to college is a time of many changes; it is a transition into adulthood and independence. With independence comes the need to make many new choices. One of the choices I must make as I enter my freshman year of college is how best to keep feminism in my life. Next year I will [...]

The Violence Against Women Act Must Protect Native American Women

Native-American-women-11

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Senate reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The version of VAWA that the Senate passed included new provisions to protect Native American women.  While the reauthorization of VAWA itself is significant, equally important are these new provisions because they extend VAWA’s protections to the Native American women living on [...]

Yesterday I was startled by a video posted by a young man in Kannapolis, NC. In the video he pulls out a shotgun and shoots a “No on Amendment One” yard sign while discussing how marriage is between a man and a woman. In the news, a preacher from Fayetteville, NC is urging his congregation [...]
