MARCH NEWS

3 ways to raise the money for March transportation

  • Sell bus tickets to get your deposit. Usually bus companies only need a $500 deposit to reserve a bus. That means you only need to sell 15 to 20 tickets to get your deposit!
  • Have a bucket drive. This is a great way to fundraise and get your message out. Stand at busy locations on your campus and let people know that you're fundraising to bring delegations to the March. Try to talk to people as they're leaving places where they've spent money and received change, like the student union, bookstore, or the cafeteria. You could also talk to local businesses to see if they would allow you to do a bucket drive in front of their store on a busy weekend. Be ready to supply information to people if they're interested in going with you!
  • Ask for funding from your school. Student Government, the women's center, and various departments may be able to offer financial support for transportation costs. sample fundraising letter & other kit materials

CAMPUS NEWS

The Vagina Monologues and V-Day

The V-Day campaign produces performances of “The Vagina Monologues” to raise money to help “grassroots, national, and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls.” V-Day campaigns are kicking into high gear all over the country this month, and there's almost guaranteed to be a performance close to you. To search for a V-Day event, go to http://events.vday.org/search.php , choose your state, and find one nearby. There are nearly 100 FMLA schools listed that will be producing the show this year. If your group is not staging its own performance, a great idea for an FMLA event would be to go as a group to one that is already planned.

HBO Special Screening

The Feminist Majority Foundation is pleased to announce the premiere of the HBO film, "Iron Jawed Angels."   The film tells the true story of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, two pioneering suffragists who set out to change the rights of women forever by fighting for the passage of the 19th Amendment -- women's right to vote!  The film stars Academy Award-winners Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston, along with Frances O'Connor, Patrick Dempsey and Julia Ormond.  Director Katja von Garnier uses modern music and contemporary style to create a powerful, moving film.  "Iron Jawed Angels" will air on Sunday, February 15 at 9:30pm EST.

Join the fun! FMLAs and affiliates across the country are planning to host viewing parties to watch "Iron Jawed Angels."  It's easy to organize. All you will need is a comfortable location to watch the movie, snacks, and other feminists to join you.  Publicize your “Iron Jawed Angels” viewing party by flyering, placing ads in the school paper, sending out emails, and word of mouth.  This is a great way for students at your campus to get together and view a remarkable and groundbreaking new film. For more information on the film and help with hosting a viewing party, please visit http://www.feministcampus.org/act/IJApremeire.asp.

On February 12, 2004, the Boston University Women's Center, Simmons College Feminist Union, Case Western's FMLA, Towson University Women's Studies Department, Hamline University's FMLA, and Ohio State University's Feminist Student United are hosting "Iron Jawed Angels” free advanced screenings in their area and registering young people to vote at the same time. Way to Go ladies!
