George Mason University
George Mason University FMF affiliate group Pro-Choice Patriots hosted their first annual Sextravaganza on April 25th, an event to educate the campus about all options and all perspectives concerning sexual health and identity. Representatives from groups such as GMU Peer Health Educators, Advocates for Youth, Catholic Campus Ministries, Global Campaign for Microbicides, and the FMF distributed information. While many feminist groups hold similar events on their campuses, Sextravaganza 2005 received widespread attention from local and national media due to the response of community members and several Virginia lawmakers. One in particular, State Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-Fairfax) opposed the fair taking place, denouncing Sextravganza as "really just designed to push sex and sexual libertine behavior as far, fast, and furiously as possible." Pro-Choice Patriots Co-Chair Amanda Agan was surprised at the political response that the event garnered. She said that the group was mindful of presenting a variety of perspectives while exploring topics such as safe sex, date rape, sexual health, and abstinence.
The GMU Administration supported the group's event, commending the students for sparking a dialogue about the potential outcomes and consequences of sexual behavior.*

California State University Chico
In response to hate graffiti being spread on their campus, the Women's Center at CSU Chico (an FMF affiliate group) organized a Reclaim Graffiti Day during which they placed large planks of wood out on the quad and had people paint positive graffiti messages on them. See more pictures of the positive graffiti!
Sonoma State University
The Sonoma State University (CA) FMLA participated in a Safe Spring Break tabling fair on their campus. The FMLA table had information about EC and the Back Up Your Birth Control campaign. They coordinated with the campus health center to have someone from the health center tabling with them who would set up appointments for students to go to the health center and get an advance prescription for EC.
Hood College
Congratulations to the new FMLA at Hood College (MD), which just recieved official recognition as a student group and granted a budget of over $2000 for the 2005-2006 academic year!

New Legislation Would Impose Federal Restrictions on Teen Abortion
April 28, 2005--Yesterday, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would criminalize the transportation of a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion without parental involvement. The so-called Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act would require doctors to contact the parents of out-of-state patients 24 hours before performing an abortion. The Senate is expected to consider its version, known as the Child Custody Protection Act, this summer. This is the third time the House has passed such legislation, but the Senate has never considered the measure before. However, the policy is on the Republicans' top 10 list of priorities this year, the Associated Press reports. President Bush issued a statement yesterday urging the Senate to pass the bill. More
Republicans Reject Compromise on Judicial Nominees
April 27, 2005--Senate Republicans yesterday rejected a compromise offered by Democrats on judicial nominees. The compromise would have allowed some of President Bush's conservative nominees to receive simple majority votes in the Senate, and President Bush would have to withdraw the other nominees to the Circuit Courts of Appeals, according to the Washington Post. In addition, Republicans would have had to agree not to change Senate rules to ban future filibusters against judicial nominees. This rule change, known as the "nuclear option," would prevent filibusters on judicial nominees -- including Supreme Court nominees -- by requiring only a simple 51-vote majority to close debate and move to a vote on the judges. Present rules require 60 votes to close the debate. A recent Washington Post/ABC News poll found that two out of three Americans oppose changing the rules of the Senate to "make it easier for the Republicans to confirm Bush's judicial nominees." More

Thousands of Girls Forced to Fight With Armed Groups
April 28, 2005--A new report shows that current efforts to release children from armed groups often overlook the fact that over 120,000 girls have been abducted and forced to fight with armed groups around the world. According to the Save the Children report "Forgotten Casualties of War: Girls in Armed Conflict," girls as young as eight years old are being forced to be sex slaves or so-called "wives" of commanders. The report shows that approximately 300,000 children are involved in armed conflict around the world today, and up to 40 percent of them are girls. In addition to being sexually violated by armed groups, girls are forced to take an active part in fighting. They also take on other duties such as cleaning and providing medical care. More
