University of South Carolina
FMLA members protested the state's sex education policies in front of the State House in Columbia last week. The protest was in response to a decision by Fort Hill high school administrators to ban any discussion of abortion, gay marriage, or stem cell research in a mock presidential debate held by the high school's students. South Carolina's health education act currently prohibits discussion of abortion and homosexuality in a classroom setting.
The FMLA now plans to survey area middle and high schools in order to have a better picture of what is being taught in sex education classes. They plan to use that information to continue efforts to change the current law through protests, possible lobbying, petitioning, and contacting school teachers, counselors, and administrators with things they can do to help change the current requirements and restrictions.
Penn State University
On Friday, October 29 the PSU FMLA, along with the PSU Women's Studies Program, will host Gloria Steinem. Penn State is one stop on Steinem's "1,500 mile road trip to reach women and young voters." Tickets for this event are free!
University of Iowa
In preparation for a week when students could vote on campus, The University of Iowa FMLA held a screening of Iron Jawed Angels. They used the showing of this film about what women went through to get the right to vote to inspire people to get active. Using the slogan, "These women gave their lives - can you give one day?" they signed up volunteers to help get the word out about the satellite voting stations they have on many campuses in Iowa - where students can vote early by filling out an absentee ballot in person. All this week, as students vote early, the FMLA will ask those who have already voted if they will volunteer to Get Out Her Vote on Nov. 2nd.
The FMLA at Iowa State University is holding a similar campaign to advertise it's satellite voting station, as are students at the University of Northern Iowa. Feminist Spotlight: Clarion University FMLA

We would like to congratulate Clarion University's FMLA on being approved to be an official student group on their campus after passing the semester-long trial period with flying colors! Since their establishment, they have actively been involved in several different awareness campaigns and activities on their campus and in their community.
This summer they designed a glass case display in the hallway of a building on campus with important information on the suffragist movement, the FMLA, and The Vagina Monologues. They also have created an exhibit called Faces of Feminism in the hallway of their Women's Studies Office Building. This photography exhibit displays Clarion feminists and each individual's explanation of what feminism means to them.
This fall Clarion University's FMLA has been working hard on the Get Out Her Vote campaign. They registered many people to vote in their area and are currently involved in mobilization efforts. As part of GOHV they also worked with Ani DiFranco's Vote Dammit Tour. They got around 218 pledge cards and 48 registrations in one night at one of Ani's concerts! They have also coordinated a "movie night" screening of Iron Jawed Angels. At that event, they talked about voting and the suffragist movement. On National Coming Out Day, the FMLA teamed up with Allies to coordinate an awareness campaign for this important day. In honor of Domestic Violence Month, they teamed up with Women United and STAR to celebrate their 4th Annual Flame to Fire, which is a domestic violence awareness event at Clarion. This year, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, these organizations are collecting items for Stop Abuse for Everyone (SAFE), a local non profit organization that helps battered women.
Later this year, the FMLA will begin preparations for their annual production of The Vagina Monologues. In conjunction with this production, they have a weeklong celebration called The Vagina Carnival. During this week, the FMLA will host a series of events about women and women's empowerment.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Clarion University's FMLA, and thank them for all of their hard work!

The winners of
the Get Out Her Vote rewards will be announced in the next issue of the Feminist Campus Ezine.

No Country Has Achieved Full Equality for Women Reports CEDAW Committee
October 18, 2004--Marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the UN Committee for CEDAW announced that no country in the world has achieved full equality between men and women in law and in practice.
