Feminist Campus | The Feminist Majority Foundation | Get Out Her Vote |
What's New

I am voting November 2nd because...
Get Out Her Vote 2004 was a succcess, no matter what the outcome.

The 2004 election is now decided, but we at FMF would like to congratulate everyone who worked to Get Out Her Vote over these last few months. With your help we motivated more young women than ever to stand up and use the right that their suffragist foremothers fought so hard to win. However, the fight for equality is not over and it is imperative that we continue in the spirit and energy of the last few months to use our voices and to stand up for women's rights. So keep up your hard work, it is very important and appreciated! Check out some stories and pictures from the field.

Where we go from here...
The next step for FMF's Campus Program is our Emergancy Contraception over-the-counter campaign. According the Kaiser Family Foundation, only 1 in 5 women in the US know enough about emergency contraception to access EC pills within the 72-hour time frame. We must empower every woman on every campus by educating them on Emergency Contraception. Join us Dec. 6th-10th in an EC Week of Action.

Anti-Choice Leaders Plan to Restrict Abortion Further in Bush's Second Term
November 5, 2004--Anti-abortion advocates responding to the results of the presidential election announced that with President Bush's win and the Republican Party's increased control of the US Congress, they have hopes that the administration will successfully pursue an anti-choice agenda. Citing a net gain of three anti-choice senators, the National Right to Life Committee is planning to pursue legislation that would make it a crime to travel with a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion in order to circumvent restrictive parental notification laws that inhibit a woman’s right to choose, according to Reuters. Anti-abortion advocates are also aiming to ban human cloning, even for stem cell research purposes, as well as secure right-wing, anti-abortion nominations to federal courts. More

Record Number of Women to Serve in US House
November 3, 2004--A record number of women will serve in the US House of Representatives next year, while the number of women in the Senate will remain steady at 14. Eight women picked up open seats or unseated incumbents, and 57 female incumbents retained their seats, in addition to three non-voting delegates (representing Washington, DC, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands). Of the eight new women elected to the US House, five are pro-choice, pro-women's rights. Democrats who were endorsed by the Feminist Majority PAC: Melissa Bean (IL-8), Cynthia McKinney (GA-4), Gwen Moore (WI-4), Allyson Scwartz (PA-13), and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL-20). In a close race, Bean ousted Rep. Phil Crane (R-IL), a longtime opponent of women's rights and reproductive rights. More

Massive Voting Turnout Among Young People
November 3, 2004--More than 20 million young people ages 18-29 voted on November 2, which represents some 4.6 million more voters than in the 2000 election. Similarly, voter turnout among the young increased by almost 10 percent, from 42.3 percent in 2000 to 51.6 percent in 2004.

Though there are no numbers as of yet for voters between the ages of 18 to 24, or voters on college campuses, anecdotal evidence points to high turnout among college students. Field organizers for the Feminist Majority Foundation's Get Out Her Vote campaign report intense interest in the election and high turnout numbers on campuses across the country. More

World AIDS Day
AIDS is a women's issue. Since the beginning of the epidemic in the USA, 152,060 women have been diagnosed with AIDS. For these women, heterosexual contact was the most common route of HIV transmission (source: http://www.avert.org). By the end of 2003, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 19.2 million women were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, accounting for approximately 50 percent of the 40 million adults living with HIV/AIDS (source: http://www.niaid.nih.gov).

Plan your World Aids Day events now, so that you have time to organize a successful event for this important day. Once you have your plans in place, let us know what you are planning so we can feature your good ideas in the ezine!

International Human Rights Day
This day is an opportunity to celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets forth human rights and fundamental freedoms for people all over the world, and has a specific impact on the lives of women, by holding their countries accountable for their treatment.

This is an important day to bring attention to global women's rights. Women comprise 70% of the worlds poor, and discrimination against women and girls is an important basic cause of malnutrition. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, if it is upheld, would work to reverse these issues and help create equality for women.

Get info on what you can do on your campus for this important day.
