Thank you to everyone who participated in the South Atlantic and Midwest Regional Conferences - they were both huge successes! For those of you in the South Central and Western regions of the country, you still have a chance to attend one of these inspiring and informative conferences!

Featured Speaker: Dr. Sarah Weddington
Sarah Weddington is the attorney who argued and won Roe v. Wade in 1972. She is a nationally-known attorney and spokesperson on public issues and leadership and has been a long-time advocate for women.

West Coast Conference: Nov. 11th-12th, Claremont College (Claremont, CA)
Keynote Speaker: Dolores Huerta
Dolores Huerta is the co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). The mother of 11 children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Dolores has played a major roll in the American civil rights movement.

Mercer University
Twelve members of the Mercer University (GA) FMLA recently participated in the Susan J. Komen Race for the Cure, raising over $2200 for breast cancer research. The team ranked 2nd out of 65 teams for fundraising. They participated in the race in celebration of a Women's and Gender Studies professor at Mercer who is a breast cancer survivor for almost 2 years.

Students Protest Pharmacist's Refusal to Give Rape Survivor EC
October 28, 2005--More than 70 students, community members, and local politicians held a demonstration outside of Fry's Food and Drug Store in Tucson, Arizona, yesterday to protest its refusal to fill a rape survivor's prescription for emergency contraception (EC). The protest was led by the Network of Feminist Student Activists, an affiliate student group at the University of Arizona. More

New Record Set for Women's Political Representation in New Jersey
November 10, 2005 -- Wins by women candidates in Tuesday’s election have set a new record for women’s representation in New Jersey. The state legislature will now include 22 women, a record for New Jersey. This brings New Jersey out of its place on the list of ten worst states for women’s representation, according to the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). New Jersey is now tied with Alaska in 32nd place, with women making up 18.3 percent of the state legislators More

Parental Notification, Redistricting Ballot Measures Fail in California
November 9, 2005 - In an impressive victory for women's health advocates, voters in California defeated a ballot measure (proposition 73) that would have required doctors to notify the parents of young women under the age of 18 before performing an abortion. The proposal, endorsed by Governor Schwarzenegger, was defeated 52.6 percent of 47.4 percent. More

Representatives Propose Bill to Force FDA Action on Plan B
November 4, 2005--Four members of the House of Representatives introduced legislation yesterday that would give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 30 days to take action on the emergency contraceptive Plan B, after which it would be automatically approved for over-the-counter sales. The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Christopher Shays (R-CT), Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Joseph Crowley (D-NY), does not aim to overstep the FDA’s authority, but merely to force a decision after nearly two years of delays. Alito Hearing, Vote Schedule Announced; Filibuster Still on the Table
November 4, 2005--Senate Judiciary Chair Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Ranking Minority Member Patrick Leahy (D-CT) announced yesterday the schedule planned to consider the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. The committee hearings are scheduled to begin on January 9, 2006, with a committee vote planned for January 17 and an expected full Senate vote on January 20. However, Senator Leahy did not commit to a vote on January 20, leaving open the possibility of a filibuster. More

House Subcommittee Unanimously Approves Resolution on Juarez Murders
November 10, 2005 -- The House International Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere has unanimously approved a resolution authored by Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA) that addresses the violent murders of women in border cities of Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. The resolution denounces the murders and asks that the United States government engage the Mexican government in order to solve the open cases and work to prevent any more deaths. More

Nigerian Lawyer Awarded Human Rights Prize
November 8, 2005 - Hauwa Ibrahim, Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, is one of three recipients of the European Parliament's distinguished 2005 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Ibrahim has been courageously defending people (mainly women) “condemned under sharia law to horrifying punishments (lashing, stoning, and amputation),” according to the European Parliament. More
