Start an FMLA at Your High School!
Feminist Majority Leadership Alliances are student run, nationally affiliated pro-choice feminist groups. Leadership Alliances constitute the largest permanent network of young feminist activists in the world, and provide participants with opportunities to develop their leadership and organizing skills. As an affiliate of the Feminist Majority Foundation you have access to an experienced, trained, youth organizer to help you with group dynamics and program planning. You also have access to a network of feminist activists around the world.
Starting a group at your school can be an exciting one, but we advise you to have a good foundation of support before you get started. Here is a list of suggested steps you should take:
- Have a core group of 3-5 students who want to start the group with you. Having this support divides the responsibilities and helps to ensure that the group will have longevity long after you graduate.
- Find an advisor! Seek out a teacher, counselor, nurse, or administrator who is interested in being a feminist advisor to your student group. This will allow you to have support within the schools administration and will lend you assistance in navigating any red-tape you might run into when starting a group.
- Create a plan of action! Speak with your advisor and other founding members to decide what issues you want learn and become active about.
