When you work at the Feminist Majority Foundation, self-identifying as a feminist is not exactly controversial. But outside our office, people don’t always understand why feminism is still necessary, or what it means to be a feminist.
That’s why a group of students at Duke University started the Who Needs Feminism? Project. They were tired of hearing people regurgitate tired, inaccurate stereotypes about feminists, so they decided to photograph hundreds of people holding signs explaining why they need feminism. Each person’s sign is different, and often personal, but together they paint a compelling picture of why the world needs feminism.
This summer, FMF interns and staff decided to tell their stories as part of the project. Here are some of the reasons why we need feminism!
