Social Realism & Lesbian Romance
Saint-Clair is as passionate about the sensuality of her writing as she is about exposing the readers of her brand of romance to the emotionally harsh landscape that she believes is the real life backdrop against which many women have to struggle, before they come into their own.
The thinking woman's lesbian novelist
C.C. Saint-Clair, Australian author, has published 7 very gritty and very sensual paperback novels. Her claim to fame is that each plot *exposes* an unpleasant aspect of the community in which we live not only as dykes, but also as mothers, and daughters, often as survivors, too.
While her background issues are always relevant and topical - mindsets regarding emotional and incestuous, homophobia, domestic violence or even loyalty to one's partner are for the most part enduring, endemic and worth flagging for the rest of us.
Saint-clair entices us to explore the darker sides of our lives by sweetening her plots with well crafted dyke romance and very sexy moments. Alexandra, character in North and Left [Take II] wrestles with a loneliness of the heart, while Joanna, in Far from Maddy excludes herself from society while she heals her emotional wounds and Morgan in the Mirror is about a young FTM character who does everything well, even blurring, but who has yet to risk disclosure, even to his friends.
Far from dark, her writing is personal and intelligently confronting.
the thinking woman's lesbian romance novelist
c.c. saint-clair's novels empower us, women, survivors of a number of societal shortcomings, all of which created by the 'nice' man-in-the-street and tacitly rubberstamped by society as a whole. From homelessness to incest, from emotional abuse to domestic violence, her novels cover the gamut. What is particularly different about her writing is that she handles our urban survival in an intelligently confronting manner and though her plots are cloaked in layers of sensuality, her women characters are always empowered and so are we - by proxy. Risking-me kicks starts her 2nd series. Far From Maddy is a must read.
