Hey, feminists! What’s crack-a-lackin’? What’s that, you say? You’ve been wicked busy doing lots of feminist outreach on college campuses? How wild – same here! In fact, here in sunny Cali-for-ni-ay, the FMF interns had a top-notch visit to East Los Angeles College (ELAC) on Wednesday, June 25.

We started the day with a few visits to classrooms, where we spoke to ELAC students about the meaning behind the word “Feminist,” the “Get Out Her Vote Campaign”  – designed to raise awareness about the underrepresentation of women in politics, reproductive rights, and encourage people to vote in even the smallest elections in order to make a difference in their community – and ways that they can get involved to make changes on the ELAC campus.  Then, we set up tables in the heart of campus and chatted with a smattering of students, continuing to inform the ELAC community and simultaneously learning from what they shared with us.

The FMF interns collaborated with ELAC’s Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA), to keep feminist issues at the forefront of ELAC’s student body. We had a meeting with the presidents of the club, including Evelyn Rodriguez, who shared a great deal regarding her experiences with feminist and immigration reform issues both on- and off-campus.

Evelyn also contributed her thoughts on the future of FMLA at ELAC:

I’m really excited for the future of the ELAC Feminist Majority Club! The presentations by the FMF interns informing the ELAC student body about reproductive health and rights and Get Out Her Vote campaigns really sparked interest! Presentations were engaging, informative, and interesting. I’m really excited for the future of the ELAC Feminist Majority Club not only will we work on integrating these campaigns but the club will also be integrating Women’s issues from near and dear to the communities of ELAC’s student body.

Overall, the visit to ELAC was eventful and successful, bringing unity to those involved with FMF and FMLA, and ultimately, bringing awareness to a number of capable and engaged individuals.
